Lagos goes out late and stays out later. On a Friday night the city’s lounges, bars and clubs are full well past midnight, and in December the parties do not stop.
Where
- Victoria Island and Ikoyi have the expensive lounges, rooftops and clubs, and the strictest door policies.
- Lekki has bars, lounges and beach clubs, and much of the newer scene.
- The mainland — Ikeja, Surulere, Yaba — has its own bars, clubs and live music, usually cheaper and less dressed-up.
- Beach parties happen on the private beaches at weekends.
Places open and close quickly. Ask friends, and follow the venues and promoters you like.
What to expect
- Late starts. Nothing is busy before eleven.
- Table service and bottle minimums at many clubs: a table can require a minimum spend. Ask before you sit.
- Dress codes at upmarket venues; no shorts or slippers.
- Prices vary enormously between a mainland bar and an Island lounge. Ask for the menu with prices before you order.
Getting home safely
- Plan the ride home before you go out. Book from inside the venue or a busy, lit spot, and check the car and plate.
- Go and leave with friends, and agree where to meet if you are split up.
- Watch your drink. Do not leave it unattended or accept one you did not see poured.
- Carry little: one card, some cash, your phone.
