Public holidays and dates

How this page is kept

Nigeria's public holidays are computed, not typed. They are generated from the same list the rest of the site uses, so they roll forward every year and cannot go stale.

The Islamic holidays are the exception worth knowing. Eid-el-Fitr, Eid-el-Kabir and Eid-el-Maulud are declared by the Sultan of Sokoto on sighting the moon, usually a day or two ahead, and the federal government then gazettes the days off. The dates here are calculated, so they can be a day out. When a holiday falls on a weekend, the government often declares the following Monday instead — that is announced, not calculated, and is not shown here until it is.

There is no Lagos events calendar on this site yet. There is no public events API with real Lagos coverage, so a calendar has to be kept by hand, with every listing carrying where it came from and when it was checked — and nobody has started keeping it. Rather than pull listings from somewhere unverified, this page shows the holidays alone.
