Map of Lagos

Lagos State's 20 local government areas, all 24 of its federal constituencies and 24 landmarks, and Nigeria's 36 states and the FCT around it. Colour the LGAs by senatorial district or by modelled population. Tap anything.

How many people live in each LGA

Nobody knows, and these are two different guesses

Nigeria has not held a census since 2006, and that one is disputed in Lagos above anywhere: the state ran its own count and rejected the federal one, and in 2013 a tribunal nullified the results for 14 of its 20 LGAs and ordered a recount that never happened.

The modelled 2025 figures are WorldPop, Nigeria population v3.0's, and the map's population colours use them. They are a model, not a count. The model learned from household counts in nine other states, not Lagos, and it works from the footprint of buildings, so it cannot see how many storeys a building has. That is probably why it puts far fewer people than the 2006 census in the dense old districts — Lagos Island, Mushin, Ajeromi-Ifelodun — and far more on the fringe.

Where the two columns disagree by a factor of three, nobody can tell you which is closer.

Modelled, not counted. WorldPop trained its model on household counts from nine states, and Lagos is not one of them, so every Lagos figure is a prediction from settlement footprints and other covariates, scaled to the UN's 2025 projection for Nigeria. Its authors call these operational estimates, not official statistics. Nnanatu C.C., Gadiaga A., Abbott T. J., Chamberlain H., Lazar A. N., Tatem A. J. (2025). The 20 local government areas

Lagos State has 20 local government areas, grouped into three senatorial districts — Lagos West, Lagos Central and Lagos East — each of which elects one senator. Since 2003 the state has also run development areas inside them, the LCDAs. No open boundary data exists for those, so they are not drawn.

Federal constituency boundaries are not published as open data, so they are listed by the LGA that contains them rather than drawn. In Lagos every constituency is an LGA or half of one: four inner LGAs — Lagos Island, Mushin, Oshodi-Isolo and Surulere — each hold two.

Where this comes from

Nothing here is drawn by hand or remembered. The build that makes this map stops rather than publish if Lagos does not come out with exactly 20 LGAs and the 24 constituencies its source lists, if the 2006 counts do not sum to the published state total of 9,113,605, or if any landmark falls outside the LGA it is supposed to be in.
