A first visit to Lagos can overwhelm. A little preparation by the host makes it a good trip.
Before they come
- Visa: check whether they need one and how to apply; many nationalities apply online before travel. Visas and arriving
- Health: malaria prevention, and any vaccinations their own doctor advises. Malaria
- What to pack: light clothes, a rain jacket in the rainy season, and something smart if there is a party.
The airport
Meet them yourself, or send a driver they can identify by name and photo. Arrivals at Murtala Muhammed can be chaotic; agree a meeting point, and tell them to decline offers of help from strangers. Allow for traffic on the way home.
Phones and money
A local SIM gives them data for maps and messages, and lets you reach them. Show them how payment works here, and keep some cash on hand.
SIM cards and internet Cash, POS and transfers
Where they stay
With you, in a hotel, or in a short-let nearby. Close to you is better than glamorous: traffic makes distance expensive.
The first few days
Plan a few things, grouped by area, with time to rest. Introduce them to food gently. Explain the security habits you take for granted, and share the emergency numbers.
