Lagos was not built for bicycles. There are few cycle lanes, drivers are not looking for cyclists, and heat and pollution make long rides hard. But people do cycle, mostly for sport at weekends, and the community is growing.

Commuting

Commuting by bike is possible over short distances inside quiet estates and neighbourhoods. On main roads, among danfos, trucks and okadas, it is dangerous. Most cyclists ride for exercise, not to work.

Where cycling works

  • Early on weekend mornings, on the long roads and bridges on the Island before the traffic, often with a club.
  • Inside large estates, with quieter roads.
  • Organised rides that close or escort part of a route.

Clubs

Cycling clubs and groups ride most weekends, and welcome newcomers. Riding in a group is far safer than alone, and they know the routes.

Buying a bike

New bikes are sold in sports shops and online; used bikes come through the markets and through people leaving Lagos. Buy a good lock, lights and a helmet with it.

Leaving Lagos

Staying safe

  • Wear a helmet and bright clothing; use lights front and back.
  • Assume nobody has seen you. Watch for doors opening and vehicles pulling out without warning.
  • Avoid riding at night and on major roads.
  • Go early, before the heat, and drink plenty.
