Lesson teachers and tutoring in Lagos - extra lessons, exams and choosing a tutor

Extra lessons are part of growing up in Lagos. Many children have a lesson teacher who comes to the house after school, and older students attend tutorial centres for WAEC and JAMB.

The options

• A home lesson teacher, often a teacher or student, coming a few afternoons a week.
• Tutorial centres, for exam preparation, especially in the year before WAEC and JAMB.
• Online tutoring, increasingly common, and free of the traffic.

Exams

• Common Entrance for secondary school places.
• WAEC and NECO at the end of secondary school.
• JAMB’s UTME for university.

Tutorial centres that focus on these teach to the exam. Choose by their results, checked with parents whose children went there, not their advertising.

Choosing a tutor

• Ask for references from other families, and call them
• Check identity with a NIN, and know where they live
• Sit in on the first lesson
• Agree what they teach, how often and the fee, in writing
• Keep lessons in a shared room, not behind a closed door

Beware exam fraud

“Special centres” that promise results, leaked papers or someone to sit the exam are fraud, and can get a candidate’s results cancelled and the candidate banned. Avoid them entirely.
