Most Lagos homes cook with liquefied petroleum gas from a cylinder. It is cleaner and cheaper than kerosene or charcoal, and safe if handled properly. Gas explosions, at homes and at refilling plants, are a real hazard.
Cylinders
- Buy a cylinder from a reputable dealer, and check it is not rusty, dented or leaking.
- Check the valve and the regulator fit properly, and replace a cracked or old hose.
- Old cylinders should be tested or replaced; ask the dealer.
Refilling
- Use a licensed refilling plant, not a roadside seller decanting gas.
- Watch the scale, and ask for the cylinder to be weighed.
- Do not refill near flames or while smoking.
Where to keep it
- Upright, in a ventilated place, ideally outside the kitchen with the hose passing through the wall.
- Away from flames, heat and electrical switches.
- Never in a closed cupboard or a room where people sleep.
Spotting a leak
LPG has a smell added so you can notice it. To check a connection, brush soapy water on it: bubbles mean a leak. Never use a flame to look for one.
If you smell gas
- Do not switch anything on or off, not even a light, and do not light a match.
- Turn off the cylinder valve.
- Open doors and windows.
- Get everyone out, and call for help from outside.
If a cylinder catches fire, leave and call the fire service.
